Title : « Des soins collaboratifs entre ergothérapeutes et consultantes en lactation certifiées (IBCLC) pour soutenir l’allaitement chez les mères en situation de handicap physique »

Summary: This presentation describes a pilot project on collaborative care that brings together the expertise of certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs) and occupational therapists to support families living with physical disabilities. This collaboration has made it possible to better identify clients’ actual needs – in terms of both practical adaptations and emotional support – and to address these needs in a coherent, continuous and reassuring manner for parents. This project offers a path towards a sustainable and equitable service provision that meets the identified needs of clients and improves the experience for both families and teams.

Title: Deux regards, un même bébé : quand l’orthophoniste et l’IBCLC font équipe
[Pour une expérience relationnelle, efficiente et sécuritaire de l’alimentation]

Résumé:

Breastfeeding is a fundamentally interdisciplinary field, which draws on complex skills that lie at the intersection of several areas of expertise. When feeding difficulties arise in very young children, professionals such as an IBCLC lactation consultant and a speech and language therapist may be called upon to assess common symptoms, whilst drawing on their distinct knowledge, skills and fields of practice.

This talk aims to explore what each of these professionals can offer to a breastfed infant and, above all, what benefits arise from combining their respective areas of expertise. What does a speech and language therapist do when working with a breastfed infant? Which aspects of feeding fall more specifically within her area of expertise? How can the expertise of the speech and language therapist and the IBCLC be combined to make the most of their complementary perspectives within a dyad-centred approach, serving the individuals, their choices and their relationship?
Drawing on clinical scenarios, we will explore the concepts of efficiency, safety and the relational experience of feeding, as well as how the speech and language therapist’s and the IBCLC’s perspectives complement one another in supporting adaptations and compensations when the infant’s skills are limited or immature, whilst respecting the parents’ objectives and feeding choices.

Finally, we will examine a broader question: why is collaboration between IBCLCs and speech and language therapists still underdeveloped in Quebec? What barriers might explain this, and what approaches could help to develop truly complementary collaborations?

An invitation to explore two extraordinary areas of professional expertise, to better understand the boundaries and common ground between their fields of practice, and to reflect on what a true ‘dream team’ supporting breastfed infants might look like.
